Complete Beginner's Guide to Trackdays/Bike racing?

KCSB-
I recently have been doing some research and getting some riding practice under my belt, and would really like to get into tracking my motorcycle next season; thus, I would like to become fully educated about the process (as much as possible without doing it) over this winter.

I was curious if anyone knew about a complete beginner's guide to track days for motorcycles? I searched the forum and could not really find much pertinent stuff.

I am looking for info like:
bike prep
basic etiquette
costs
supplies
etc

Thanks!

Re: Complete Beginner's Guide to Trackdays/Bike racing?

If your gonna race the racing school at heartland is very good. If your going to run track days then it's good too. You can always use more knowledge.. I believe on track days you have to tape up your lights. (take out the bulbs) take off your mirrors, not sure on the kickstand, (CCS requires it to be taken off) and not sure if anything needs to be safety wired for track days.. CCS requires alot to be safety wired.. So figure out which one you want to do and look up more info from there.. plenty of racers on here to get ya going..

Honestly if you havent gone already a track day will give you a really good intro to what the track is like, and then you can delve into your wallet for racing!!

And the difference between a track day and racing is the difference between throwing bullets and shooting them.

Track days will get you over the sensory overload, but only racing experience will teach you how to race.

A 600 is a nice bike for track days. An SV650 is a great bike to start racing.

Tires are your insurance. Run 'em, then sell them as take offs to someone that can use the center part on the street. Turn that money back into tires.

Handling is not purchased in components, but it is from the components and the knowledge of understanding the relationship between that mechanical support, your riding style, and the feedback the bike is now capable of giving you.

Oh, either way, have fun.

Just remember: more gas, less brakes and you'll win every time.

Here is a link to an article written by a friend/track buddy of mine. He's an accomplished club racer and all around good guy with a knack for capturing in writing the emotions many of us experience(d).
